Jaw pain and headaches can be troublesome for most people and can affect how they function at work, school or even quality time with family and friends. The excruciating pain is something all of us don’t want to endure for too long. There are many causes of pain and some are hard to deal with; an over the counter medication doesn’t seem to help mainly because the pain is connected to a myriad of health problems. An example of this is TMJ disorder.

All You Need to Know About TMJ Disorders

What is TMJ Disorder?

Temporomandibular joint or known as TMJ disorder is a type of jaw pain that is caused by different medical problems. The TMJ connects the lower jaw known as mandible to the skull in front of the ear. Certain facial muscles are also attached to the lower jaw; these muscles also happen to be used for chewing.

What Causes TMJ Disorder?

The exact causes of TMJ disorders are often hard to determine. The pain can be a combination of the following factors including jaw injury, arthritis, and even genetics. Jaw pain can also be the cause of grinding or clenching your teeth, but that is not often the case since some people who do this don’t actually develop TMJ disorders.

On the other hand, this condition occurs when:

    • The joints cartilage is damaged by arthritis
    • The disk moves out of its alignment
    • The jaw is damaged by a blow

The Symptoms of TMJ You Need to Watch Out For

The following signs and symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

    • Painful or difficulty chewing
    • Aching facial pain
    • Joint lock; you have difficulty opening or closing your mouth
    • Pain around your ear
    • Pain and tenderness in the jaw
    • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints

TMJ Baton Rouge Treatments - Tiger Smile Family Dentistry

TMJ Treatments for a Pain-Free Jaw

Our Baton Rouge dental care facility is ready to provide you with safe and gentle procedures that won’t break the bank. No one should suffer this type of pain; since this is a delicate procedure, our TMJ treatments will make sure that it is managed properly.

Basic Treatments:

  • Moist heat or cold packs – apply an ice pack to the side of your face and temple area for 10 minutes. Do this along with a few jaw stretching exercises as instructed by your dentist. Apply a warm towel to the side of your face for about 5 minutes. Doing this several times a day will help relieve the pain.
  • Soft Diet – it is recommended that you avoid hard and large food that will need you to open your mouth wide. Stick to soft food such as yogurt, soup, bread, etc.
  • Oral medications – over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help. Our dentist can prescribe higher doses for you should you need it.
  • Splint/Night Guard – these are made of plastic worn over the upper or lower teeth. They prevent the upper and lower teeth from coming together, thus reducing clenching or grinding teeth. It also helps correct your bite. Splints are worn full time whilst night guards are worn only during the night.

I've been suffering from TMJ symptoms so I went to this dental facility here in Baton Rouge. Being a first time patient at Tiger Smile, I was impressed the moment I walked in because of the attentive staff who greeted me. I was also given a great discount as a new patient, which was very much appreciated. The TMJ dentist who treated me made sure that I understand the procedure. It was a great experience & really one of the best choices that I've made for my oral health.
