Dental Fillers -Tiger Smile Dental

Who doesn’t want to look younger?

Nowadays, there are a ton of ways to make ourselves look ten years younger.

There’s cosmetic surgery, beauty products, beauty drinks, etc.? And not all of us can afford and can take the pain of cosmetic surgeries and take the risks of trying different beauty products (and money).

From having the most beautiful teeth shape or going for a dental contouring, having that megawatt smile sure beats any plastic surgery or makeup in the world.

But a trip to a dentist is what you need if you want to improve how you look. Investing on dental treatments such as fillers or whitening can work wonders on your appearance and most importantly, it will improve the health of your teeth.
Indeed, we sometimes lose self-confidence if we can’t show our teeth or deal with unbearable pain because of cavities.

How Does Dental Filling Work?

Dental filling is a restorative dentistry process that helps fix a damaged tooth caused by bacteria and decay.

Tiger Smile DentalThrough dental fillings, the damaged tooth goes back to its normal function and shape to prevent further decay by removing the area where bacteria enter.

But before the procedure, the dentist will have to choose which type of filling is best for us; this includes asking about allergies in some dental materials or how much filling we need for our tooth.

These are the types of fillings available that the dentist might use:

  • Amalgam Fillings – this type of filling is made from a mixture of metals such as silver and mercury.
This filling doesn’t match the teeth’ color, so it may not be a good option for front teeth filling but mostly used for fillings in the back teeth.
  • Gold Fillings –  is made from gold and other metals; it could be silver or copper. It is six times more expensive compared to amalgam fillings but is extremely durable.
  • Composite Fillings – A mixture of fine glass particles and plastic is made for this type of filling. It matches the tooth’s color and is most often used to fill the tooth’s visible parts. This is stronger than amalgam and is more expensive
  • Glass Ionomer Fillings – a mixture of fluoraluminosilicate and acrylic is made for the glass ionomer fillings. It is also extremely durable and used mostly in filling the part with the tooth below the gums and filling baby teeth.
  • Ceramic Fillings – this tooth-colored filling is made of porcelain and is also used mostly to fill the visible parts of the tooth and are also stain-resistant.

However, this type of filling can break easily and is more brittle than a composite filling. Plus, it’s more expensive than gold fillings.

Can a Dental Filling Fall Out?

A dental filling may fall out due to various reasons:

  • Bruxism or teeth grinding
  • Chewing hard and crunchy foods
  • Tooth decay
  • Traumatic dental injury

That is why it’s essential to take careof our filled tooth and if these instances happen, set up an appointment with your dentist.

How Much Does a Dental Filling Cost?

full mouth rehabilitationThe cost for dental filling is often covered by your dental insurance or at least a portion of it.

However, there may be instances that your dental insurance won’t cover it, and here’s what we need to know:

  • You’ll mostly expect an additional cost for a dental filling because the dentist will be doing an x-ray to check the tooth’s damage. Once determined, the dentist will have you prepare the tooth for the procedure. The preparation may include anesthesia, then drilling to remove the decay that your insurance may not cover. The dentist will then let you know how much the total procedure will be.
  • On the other hand, if your health insurance includes a dental insurance plan, the dentist will coordinate and get an approval of what and how much will be covered by the insurance company. Although some health insurance has limited coverage for dental services, it’s better to check with your health insurance company before you get the procedure.
  • A dental filling procedure may cost between $100 – $4500 depending on the damage and the type of filling used.

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

A dental filling will last between 7-20 years with proper dental hygiene, depending on the filling’s size and location.

That’s why chew carefully! It will either break or create a pocket for bacteria to get in and soon cause another decay.

Here are some filling materials used and their life spans.

  • Gold – 20 – 30 years
  • Composite – 5 – 15 years
  • Amalgam – 10- 25 years

Restorative Dentistry vs. Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental professionals use the term “Restorative Dentistry” for fixing and replacing a damaged tooth.

While cosmetic dentistry goes beyond the restoration procedures. Unlike in restorative dentistry, where the dentist only restores the damaged tooth, cosmetic dentists help patients achieve a set of truly beautiful teeth.
