Facial Aesthetics

A more radiant and youthful appearance helps in boosting confidence!  Advancements in modern science and technology have offered people a choice in how we age. Patients can now turn back the hands of time with facial aesthetics treatments.

Benefits of Facial Aesthetics Treatments

Dental cosmetic procedures typically focus on the teeth, gums, and the general mouth area. Facial Aesthetics involves working on not just the teeth and gums, but also the cheekbones, jawline, fine lines, and wrinkles, etc.,  to restore the youthful appearance of the entire face along with the smile. The procedures have proven to deliver lasting and impressive results.

Below are some of the different types of facial aesthetics treatments offered at Tiger Smile Family Dentistry.

Why Facial Aesthetics by your Dentist

Dental professionals are focused on the head and neck areas of the body. They are trained to understand all of the tissue, musculature, nerves, and blood vessels of the face. The dentist will focus on the facial profile, skeletal patterns, and soft tissues to integrate this into your aesthetic treatments.

  • Let our professionals here at Tiger Smile Family Dentistry provide you with facial aesthetics treatment.
  • Enjoy the lasting effects that you will get out of our facial aesthetics procedures.
  • Our facial aesthetics treatments have fewer risks of complications than surgical procedures.

Dentists are more familiar with injections because they give them daily, have a great aesthetic eye, and spend most of their time and career working on the face and the maxillofacial and oral areas. It makes sense that they would be great providers for facial aesthetic treatments.

Refresh. Rejuvenate. Revitalize.

Non-invasive facial aesthetics is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures globally. With an improved facial and youthful appearance comes restored confidence and self-esteem.

Botulinum Toxin Relaxant Treatment

Botulinum Toxin Relaxant Treatment - Tiger Smile Dental

Few people welcome wrinkles with open arms. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are different brands of relaxants that reduce the visibility of wrinkles on the face and neck.

We understand that some people might scratch their heads at the idea of a dentist’s office offering injectable relaxants, but when you consider it for a minute, it makes perfect sense. Dentists are trained in the anatomy of the head and neck area and understand the musculature, nerves, and blood vessels.

Tiger Smile Family Dentistry wants to offer everything it can when it comes to improving your smile – and that includes revitalizing the face to go with it. We want to build confidence and inspire you to bring your best smile forward!

The Treatment

The way botulinum toxin treatments work is by taking a protein generated by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium and its related species. This protein is a neurotoxin that prevents muscle contractions. All other functions are not affected, including the sense of touch; only muscle activity is prevented. The protein, when applied strategically, could be used to weaken over-active muscles, like the ones around the corners of the eye which produce crow’s feet or the ones between the eyebrows that cause frown lines.

The doctor will clean the skin and place small amounts of the relaxant into the muscles or right underneath the skin using very tiny, comfortable needles. Treatment is completed within minutes and is painless!

Where it was once solely in the realm of plastic surgeons only the mega-wealthy could afford, now relaxant injections have become such a common and, in some cases, life-altering procedure. Experience improvements to your self-esteem and quality of life with this revolutionary treatment!

Where Can I Have Injections?

Relaxants are typically placed in these areas:

  • “Angry 11’s” or Frown Lines between the Eyebrows
  • Lines across the entire Forehead
  • Crow’s Feet or Periorbital Areas
  • “Bunny Lines” on the sides of the Nose
  • Around the Lips for a “Lip Flip” or subtle Pout
  • Near the nostrils to drop the upper lip for a less “Gummy” Smile
  • Smooth out Chin Dimpling
  • Both sides of the Jaw to decrease Clenching and Grinding and contour the Jaw

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are varying prescription formulas that are used to lessen wrinkles, fill out cheeks, thicken lips, lift facial features and basically lessen the effects of aging. Dermal fillers can also be used to lessen indentations caused by scarring. Dr Luong uses different types of fillers by Restylane and  Juvederm for different areas of the face.

What Can Be Treated With Dermal Fillers?

  • Nasolabial folds and Marionette lines

These are both common patterns of wrinkles that can form deeper than most people would like. Nasolabial folds form from the nose and make “parentheses” on either side of the face. These can deepen over time. While these folds are also known as “laugh lines” and aren’t always seen as needing treatment, marionette lines form from the lip corners down to the jaw and have the unfortunate effect of making the wearer often seem sad or scowling. Common filler procedures help remove or reduce these to help you express your mood rather than having your face already set on one.

  • Downturned corners of the mouth

These unfortunate resting frowns are easy to eliminate with a little filler at the corners. Sometimes, a little lip enhancement also helps to lift those corners as well.

  • Mild Perioral Lines

Perioral lines are fine lines and wrinkles that form around our mouth in a way that tends to “radiate” from our lips. As they deepen they can add a significant aging effect to the face, but they are easy to fill out and, with regular treatment, are a normal target for preventative filling.

  • Thin lips

A popular procedure to get youthful, plump lips is the careful distribution of filler through the lips to give them just the right amount of volume to go with your face. While over-doing it is not recommended, it is nice to get some former shape restored, and feeling satisfied with your puckered lips at a fresh application of lipstick.

  • Scar indentations

While facial fillers don’t deal with the scar tissue on the surface of the skin, they do address any shape a scar has given to your face by filling out the damaged tissue and getting your face balanced shape-wise once more.

  • Lack of cheek definition

Whether it’s from the loss of tissue in aging or an overall lack of it in the first place, maybe your cheeks just don’t match the smile you want. That’s fine as well and a valid target for fillers to puff up those rosy cheeks and fill out your face with a youthful flush.

  • Pre-jowl sulcus drooping

A formation near the aforementioned marionette lines, this sulcus dropping is a common effect of aging as skin sags. This particular sagging can wreak havoc on your jawline and can be a huge contributor towards an older-looking appearance. But with facial fillers, the drooping can disappear and reform a proper jawline like that of your youth.

Is this the right treatment for you?

The initial test to see if fillers will work for you involves manual stretching of the skin to see how it alleviates the wrinkles in question. Fillers may not work for all wrinkles and indentations but are always a fantastic answer to deal with most issues so long as a little pressure on the skin folds out those wrinkles.

After it’s been determined that dermal fillers are the optimal solution, a great feature is that the effects can be immediately seen after the procedure and there is almost no downtime so you can immediately show off a more youthful face. The most common complication after treatment with dermal fillers is bruising. All pre-op and post-op instructions and risks are reviewed at your consultation appointment before getting treatment.

Kybella/PCDC Injections

Kybella and PCDC are medications used to reduce fat in different areas of the face. This new form of treatment is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures used to improve facial appearance in both men and women.

Kybella/PCDC Treatment can be defined as a non-surgical procedure that uses injectable techniques to target and removes the fat beneath the chin otherwise known as the double chin or the submental fat. The method uses deoxycholic acid that is injected to target the fat cells in the chin area. No incisions are necessary, and the downtime is very minimal. The ideal candidates for the procedure are 18 years or older who have moderate to severe fat deposits beneath the chin.

On the contrary, this procedure is not suitable for individuals who are planning or have had prior facial surgery, those with trouble swallowing, and pregnant or nursing. The injections are also not ideal for people who have a medical condition or infection near the targeted injection region.

According to the American Society for Dermatologic surgery, around 67% of people are bothered by a double chin. The procedure has become a popular alternative to liposuction due to its noninvasiveness and shorter treatment time as well as fewer severe risks. It has been observed that in its clinical trial, 83% of the people reported significant improvement in their appearance.

Cost and Preparation

A single Kybella/PCDC treatment averages between $600 and $1400, depending on the patient assessment, healthcare provider, and the number of treatments required. It is also imperative to note that this type of treatment is not covered by insurance as it is categorized as a cosmetic procedure.

How do you prepare for this treatment?

The first thing to do is to get a consultation with your provider and ensure you qualify for the procedure. Inform your dentist of your medical history and all of the cosmetic procedures you have had on your face, chin, and neck. If you have bleeding or swallowing problems, inform your healthcare professional as well.

Since the process is non-surgical, there is little preparation required. Your doctor will go over pre- and post-treatment instructions before your actual procedure date.  Avoiding acetaminophen and ibuprofen can assist in preventing post-treatment bruising. Swelling for a period of up to several weeks can be expected.

Advantages of Facial Fat Reduction

No downtime

There is no downtime linked to it immediately after the procedure. It is commonly referred to as lunch-break procedure as you will be treated during the lunch hour and you can go back to work shortly after. Depending on the individual, other patients can spend some time icing the area to prevent swelling and bruising. Unlike other alternatives such as liposuction and neck lifts which require days and even weeks for recovery, many clients prefer this option since it takes a maximum of 48 hours.

Long-lasting Results

The procedure works by dissolving the fat on the cellular level. It destroys the fat cells, and therefore they will not regenerate. Since the procedure uses a naturally occurring substance found in the body, the risk of an adverse reaction to the treatment is significantly reduced.

Some Things to Expect

This type of treatment will only treat fat, not muscle. It will also not tighten loose skin that has developed by aging, which is commonly seen in the jowl and chin areas. Patients who have this treatment done should expect to swell for a period of up to a few weeks. This is why this has to be planned accordingly for our patients. If you have special occasions or major life events coming up, you will not want to have the treatment done around those times.

Also, this procedure is not guaranteed to remove a significant amount of fat with just one treatment session. Most patients will need to come back 4 to 6 weeks later for another round. Results vary, and your doctor will assess you to see how many additional sessions you will need.

Because Kybella/PCDC has both pros and cons, it is imperative to discuss with your dentist before deciding on the treatment to select.  This treatment can be combined with other facial aesthetic procedures to give you the result you want.

PDO Threads

Typically facelifts would involve invasive surgery, which often comes with risks including infection and other complications.

However, a new method has been developed which offers the same end results with a very minimally invasive procedure – PDO Thread Lifts.

This new form of face lifting is now available right here at Tiger Smile Family Dentistry.

How Do PDO Threads Work?

The intended effects of the procedure are typically for tightening areas around the face and neck to correct sagging skin tissue.

The procedure delivers results over a period of 1 year to about three years, depending on the type of treatment the patient wants. Results will vary from patient to patient.

Threads made of polydioxanone suture are run through layers of skin that both medicate the skin to rejuvenate cellular growth and collagen stimulation as well as ‘train’ the skin itself to more closely align itself with your natural skull shape. In addition, the threads also stimulate neovascularization which also improves skin health and texture and restores natural elasticity by contracting fat tissue that lines the skin itself.

Compared to traditional surgical methods that used to be employed, your natural facial movement and muscles do most of the ‘shaping’ without leaving behind scar tissue or creating an unnatural look that would require another surgery to correct, further adding risk to the entire process.

PDO threads are highly-effective, achieve natural-looking results, and require no traditional surgery.

What Areas of the Face Can PDO Threads Target?

The procedure itself is highly flexible and can handle a wide variety of common skin issues for corrective procedures which include:

  • Common wrinkles around the eyes (also called “Crow’s Feet”)
  • Wrinkles between the brow area
  • Areas around the cheeks
  • Lifting the cheeks
  • Chronic wrinkling under the eyes
  • Drooping jowls
  • Jawline contouring
  • Loose skin of the neck
  • Fine lines in and around the lips
  • Nasolabial folds (‘laugh lines’)
  • Nasojugal folds (cheek indentations near eyes)

You will be able to lift the face and also hydrate and revitalize the texture of the skin due to the new collagen that is building up underneath the skin!

What happens during the procedure?

Once you are properly anesthetized, the threads will be run through your skin and you should see an immediate change which may look unnatural, but after a few days to a week, any ‘unnatural appearance’ will disappear as your skin starts visibly responding to the medication.

In one to two months, you should notice an improvement of skin texture, with fine wrinkles disappearing and dissolving around this time. The threads themselves will dissolve between three and six months.

At nine months, you may want another procedure done in order to reinforce the skin’s appearance and tightness. This procedure will have a less visible effect and is mostly done to lengthen the effect of the procedure itself. The effects of the PDO threads should last between two to three years with no further work required.

How Much Safer Is It Than Traditional Surgery?

The procedure is quite safe. Patients must be properly screened for any possible allergies that could arise as a reaction to the medication or threads, is quite safe. There are some side effects that include mild swelling, some soreness and discomfort during the first week and you may feel some tightness in the areas threaded for two weeks.

Some severe effects that are rare include infection, salivary duct damage, the formation of nodules and nerve damage but it’s extremely uncommon and most notably happens to patients who don’t follow the post-operation plan. This plan requires the patient to avoid alcohol, vitamin E supplements, omega fish oils, ginkgo, excessive sweating and humidity such as going to the sauna or engaging in heavy exercise like jogging.

You will also need to avoid scheduling any additional dental work after the procedure for two weeks as the threads set in; excessive facial flexing involved with dental work can cause complications with the threading.

In some cases, there may be mild dimpling or bruising, but these effects are not in any way threatening to your health or the effect of the procedure. The dimples will clear up after a few days as will the bruising. In some extreme cases, the threads may extrude from the skin or there may be migration, in which case those specific threads will simply be removed. If it is your first visit, they will be applied on the second visit if you chose to have one.

Who Is A Good Candidate for PDO Threads?

The procedure is for men or women, who have ‘trouble areas’ on their face they would like to improve to help with self-image and confidence.

The procedure works for adults of any age, and due to its non-invasive nature, it’s quite safe even for people in more advanced ages. Anyone wishing to have healthy skin and rejuvenate the natural collagen and restore blood vessels and circulation in their face will benefit from the procedure. It can also help create a slimmer look to the face for those who may have lost weight but still have some visible remnants of physical change exhibited in their profile.
